Will Magnetic Kitchen Organizers Stick to Your Fridge? 3 Checks Before You Buy

In a small kitchen, the side of the fridge is some of the best storage space you have. Magnetic racks from Japanese brand Yamazaki Home turn it into shelves for spices, paper towels and cooking tools, and their reviews are full of buyers praising how strong the magnets are.
But a magnet is only as good as what it sticks to. Some fridges, including some stainless steel ones, won’t hold a magnet at all. So before you look at any racks, take two minutes to check your fridge.
To be upfront: I haven’t tested these racks myself. This guide is based on the manufacturer’s listings, buyer reviews on Amazon (including the complaints) and an explainer from appliance maker Whirlpool.
Check 1: Will a magnet stick to your fridge at all?
Stainless steel sounds like one material, but it isn’t. According to Whirlpool, there are two broad types:
- Ferritic stainless steels, such as grades 430 and 434, are magnetic.
- Austenitic stainless steels, such as grades 304 and 316, are not magnetic.
You usually can’t tell which one your fridge uses just by looking at it. Whirlpool also notes that if the steel has a finish or coating, a weak magnet may not be strong enough to reach the metal underneath. That matters for black stainless steel in particular.
How to check: take an ordinary fridge magnet and try it on the door and on both sides of the fridge, at the height where you’d put a rack. If the magnet slides down or won’t stick, a magnetic rack won’t stay up there either. If it sticks firmly, you’re good to go.
Check 2: Is the surface flat?
This one is easy to miss. One buyer of the Yamazaki magnetic kitchen rack (pick #3 below) gave it five stars but added a warning: if your fridge door has even a slight curve, the magnets may not hold well, and theirs fell to the floor. A rack’s magnets need full contact with a flat surface.
Look at your fridge from the side. If the door bows outward, use a flat side panel instead.
Check 3: Do you have a spot that isn’t the fridge door?
Several buyers put these racks on the side of the fridge rather than the door, especially when the fridge sits next to the stove. If your fridge isn’t magnetic, or the sides are blocked by cabinets, these places come up in reviews:
- The side of a washer or dryer. Several buyers use the racks in the laundry room, and one says theirs stays put despite a lot of vibration.
- An over-the-range microwave. One buyer attached a rack to theirs to hold paper towels and oven mitts.
- The wall. The two larger racks below come with screws, so you can mount them on a wall instead.
One more note from Whirlpool: magnets with sharp corners or rough textures can scratch a fridge’s surface. If you’re worried about your finish, look at the back of a rack before you put it on.
4 Yamazaki magnetic organizers worth a look
| Pick | Best for | Holds | Main thing to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plate Magnetic Spice Rack | Spices, oils, vitamins | up to 3.3 lb | It’s not very long |
| Tosca Magnetic Kitchen Rack | Paper towels + tools, with a wood accent | up to 8 lb | Big rolls stick out past the bar |
| Plate Magnetic Kitchen Rack | The same idea in all-white steel | not listed | Curved doors, hook spacing |
| Tower Magnetic Paper Towel Holder (Wide) | Paper towels only | rolls up to 11″ long | Buy the Wide version |
1. Plate Magnetic Spice Rack
A simple steel shelf for the side of the fridge. It’s the most popular of the four, and buyers use it for spices, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar bottles, vitamins and timers.
- Size: 4.33 × 9.65 × 3.35 in (L × W × H, as listed), 1.35 lb
- Holds: up to 3.3 lb
- Colors: include white and yellow
- Rating: 4.8★ from about 4,600 ratings
Buyers say the magnet is strong enough that the rack won’t budge once it’s on, and one has used theirs for years without it slipping. One buyer in a one-bedroom apartment owns four: on the fridge for cooking basics, and on the side of a stacked washer and dryer for laundry supplies.
Good to know before you buy
- It’s shorter than some people expect. One buyer’s only complaint was that it was less long than they’d imagined. At 9.65″ wide, measure the space on your fridge and the bottles you want to put on it.
- One buyer found the yellow a slightly different shade than in the photos.
2. Tosca Magnetic Kitchen Storage Rack
A three-level rack in white steel with a wooden bar: a shelf on top for spices or a cookbook, a bar for paper towels, a bar for a dish towel, and hooks along the bottom for tools.
- Size: 3.9 × 12.6 × 14.2 in (L × W × H, as listed), 2.2 lb
- Holds: up to 8 lb
- Paper towels: rolls up to about 6″ in diameter
- Mounting: stick-on magnets that you attach to the back yourself, or screws for a wall
- Rating: 4.8★ from about 200 ratings
Buyers in very small homes love it. One, in a 420-square-foot cottage, keeps mixer attachments, pot holders, kitchen shears, towels and plastic wrap on it. Another has loaded it with glass oil bottles and a big bottle of vanilla, and says the magnets haven’t moved.
Good to know before you buy
- The paper towel bar is shorter than a big roll. One buyer found a Bounty roll sticks out past the end, so you need to hold the roll with one hand while tearing.
- A towel on the lowest bar can block the hooks underneath.
- One buyer calls the price a bit of an investment.
3. Plate Magnetic Kitchen Rack
The same layout as the Tosca rack, in all-white steel without the wood. It comes in two pieces that you screw together.
- Size: 3.5 × 11.4 × 14.2 in (L × W × H, as listed), 2.2 lb
- Paper towels: rolls up to about 6″ in diameter
- Mounting: stick-on magnets or screws for a wall
- Rating: 4.6★ from about 1,100 ratings
One buyer calls it the best thing they’ve bought on Amazon in eight years: it finally gave their plastic wrap, foil and bags a home outside an overstuffed cabinet. Others use it on an over-the-range microwave or the side of a washing machine.
Good to know before you buy
- This is the rack that fell off a curved fridge door (see Check 2).
- The hooks are close together. One buyer says ladles and spatulas overlap if you hang something on every hook.
- Packaging complaints: a few buyers received it with bent hooks or missing screws. The hooks can be bent back, but check everything when it arrives.
- Very large rolls, like Costco’s, can slip partly off the bar.
4. Tower Magnetic Paper Towel Holder (Wide)
If all you want is paper towels off the counter, this is the simplest option. It has one open side and one closed side, and it can go on vertically or horizontally.
- Size: 2.95 × 3.15 × 11.42 in (L × W × H, as listed), 1.19 lb
- Fits: rolls up to 6″ in diameter and 11″ long
- Extras: a silicone piece to keep it from slipping. It also works as a hand towel bar.
- Rating: 4.4★ from about 2,500 ratings (the Amazon page combines the Wide and regular versions)
Buyers say it holds jumbo Costco and Bounty rolls, and that the bar across the front keeps a big roll from pulling off when you tear a sheet.
Good to know before you buy: get the Wide one. The same Amazon page also sells a regular version, and it appears to be the Japanese version: its listing gives sizes in centimeters and says it fits rolls up to 24 cm (about 9.4″) tall. That’s plenty in Japan: the roll in my kitchen measures 22.6 cm, about 8.9″. But a US buyer found the regular holder about 3″ too short for their paper towels, and a buyer in Germany had the same problem. Check that the version you’ve picked says Wide before you order.
Why some Yamazaki products run small
This paper towel holder is a good example of something to keep in mind with any Japanese home product. Yamazaki’s own listings say its products are inspired by small-space living in Japan, and some are sized for Japanese homes, right down to the paper towel roll. When a listing gives sizes in centimeters, or a buyer says “smaller than I expected,” take out a tape measure before you order.
The short version
- Test your fridge with an ordinary magnet, on the door and both sides.
- Use a flat surface. Curved doors are a common reason racks fall.
- No magnetic spot? The side of a washer or dryer, an over-the-range microwave, or a wall (with the included screws) all work.
Then pick by what you want to store: the spice rack for bottles and jars, the Tosca or Plate kitchen rack for paper towels plus tools, or the Wide paper towel holder if paper towels are all you need.
