Yamazaki Tower in Black or White? How to Choose for a Small Kitchen

Yamazaki’s Tower line comes in two main colors, black and white, and it’s one of the first decisions you’ll make. It seems like a matter of taste, and partly it is. But after reading well over a hundred buyer reviews for the products on this site, I’ve noticed a few practical differences that are worth knowing before you choose.

To be upfront: this is based on the manufacturer’s listings, buyer reviews on Amazon (from the US and Japan) and some reasoning of my own, which I’ll point out as I go. I haven’t compared the two colors side by side myself.

The short answer

  • Pick one color for everything you can see. In a small kitchen, matching items look like one calm set. Mixed colors look like clutter.
  • Choose the color that’s already there. Look at your biggest things: the fridge, the kettle, the backsplash, the cabinet doors. Match those.
  • Check that your color exists for every product you want. Some Yamazaki products only come in one.

What the reviews say about each color

Black

  • Not every black is the same. Most of the Tower line has a matte, slightly textured finish, according to Yamazaki’s own description. But a buyer in Japan was surprised to find the black Expandable Support Rack almost mirror-glossy, which shows fingerprints and dust. If you’re mixing products, finishes may not match exactly.
  • Paint wear is possible, but not certain. One buyer says the black paint on their wire dish rack started coming off after about a year. Another, also with the black version, reports more than four years of daily use with no chips and no rust. Durability seems to vary more from unit to unit than by color.
  • It pairs well with other black metal. One buyer chose the black dish rack to match the black metal risers they’d been adding to their counters.

White

  • It’s the “everything matches” choice. A buyer in Japan chose a white stand specifically because they wanted all their kitchen tools in white. The Tosca products I looked at, with their wood accents, only come in white, so if you like the wood look, white keeps everything consistent.
  • Photos can mislead with colors other than black and white. One buyer of the yellow Plate Magnetic Spice Rack found the color a little different from the photos.

What I’d expect (my own reasoning, not from reviews)

I couldn’t find reviews that compare how dirty each color looks, so here’s my own thinking, based on how these finishes usually behave:

  • White is likely to show food stains, coffee drips and oil splashes, especially near the stove.
  • Black is likely to show dust, fingerprints and the white marks that hard water leaves behind, especially near the sink.

So for a dish rack or anything that’s always wet, white may hide water spots better. For something next to the stove, black may hide splashes better. If you clean often, it matters less.

Colors by product

These are the colors I saw on the Amazon.com listings while researching this site’s articles in October 2026. Availability changes, and some colors may be out of stock at times.

If one product you want only comes in black, and another only in white, that may decide the color for you.

Not sure where to start?

If you’d like to try one piece first, the Multi Eco Stand is a good test. It has more ratings on Amazon than any other product I’ve covered on this site (over 11,000), it’s useful almost anywhere in a kitchen, and it comes in both colors, so you can see how black or white looks in your space before buying more.

A note from my own kitchen

My kitchen is a mix: a white dish basket and white seasoning containers next to a black kettle and a black wire cutting board stand. It works fine. It’s just not the matching look that draws many people to Tower products. If you’re starting from scratch in a small space, it’s easier to choose one color first and then pick products, not the other way around.

How to decide in one minute

  1. Look at the three biggest things near where the product will go. Mostly white or light? Choose white. Mostly black, stainless or dark wood? Choose black.
  2. Check that your color is available for every product on your list.
  3. Think about mess. Near the sink, white may hide water spots. Near the stove, black may hide splashes.
  4. When in doubt, match what you already own. One color, everywhere you can see it.
